Infection forces spaying of mexican gray wolf at El Paso Zoo

A Mexican gray wolf named Ivy, one of the rarest creatures on the planet, was spayed Friday at the El Paso Zoo's medical center. She underwent surgery after being diagnosed with a uterine infection. Zoo Director Steve Marshall described Ivy's operation as routine, and said the staff will be watching her to make sure her recovery is successful. That is why the El Paso Zoo is sending Ivy's ovaries to the St. Louis Zoo Endangered Species Research Center & Veterinary Hospital. Scientists there will attempt to collect the eggs. "There is a chance that Ivy's genes can be passed on in the future if they are able to successfully harvest eggs from the ovaries," said El Paso Zoo Coordinator John Kiseda...El Paso Times
