Bush aide urges weapons ban to slow Mexican drug war

The former head of U.S. Customs and Border Protection called Monday for the U.S. to reinstitute the ban on assault weapons and take other measures to rein in the war between Mexico and its drug cartels, saying the violence has the potential to bring down legitimate rule in that country. Former CBP Commissioner Robert C. Bonner also called for the United States to more aggressively investigate U.S. gun sellers and tighten security along its side of the border, describing the situation as "critical" to the safety of people in both countries, whether they live near the border or not...read more

Another example of how prohibition leads to gun control, and how one government intervention creates a problem which is then proposed to be "fixed" by another government intervention.

Also a good example why Bush-type republicans are so unpopular.

Yes, indeed. It is because of garbage like this that I no longer consider myself a Republican. For all their whining, the Country Clubbers are in firm control of the apparatus these days. These geniuses seriously think that they can not only stiff their rural party base on a routine basis, but actually make war on them and still have them show up that fine November morning. What are they thinking?

To think, just over a decade ago, when I was a young College student not too far removed from the farm, I was working for the Farm & Ranch teams for the Republicans. Back then, we were bruning with Sagebrush, Son of Sage, God, Guns, and the whole deal. I met a lot of great people, and it had a profound influence on me in that I went back to the land. Now, the only folks like that are third party types and the Ron Paul fringe of the GOP, and the GOP leadership views Rural America about the same as the Hollywood types do.

What we need is a Cowboy Party. Something that can mix the best parts of good, old time rural populism with the sensibilities and reason of what we used to call Conservatism, at least pre-Bush. Lord knows that we'll never get anywhere as long as there is no leadership and the folks are ashamed of who they are.

Here in the Northeast Texas piney woods I am blessed with a congressman, Louie Gohmert, that's like a pit bull when it comes to solid, conservative, old-time Republican values. Look him up on Youtube for a few minutes of pure, Ronald Reagan type oratory.

Oh, we also have 'Code Blue', Bull of the Year.
