Oliver doesn't regret rancher's life

In 1887, three families from Texas moved to what is now Otero County. One of those was Charles O. Walker's family. They first moved to Weed, then to Sixteen Springs Canyon. One of those Walkers is Yvonne Walker, who was born in Roswell. Her father was Charles O. Walker and her mother was Bessie George. Children from Sixteen Springs rode the school bus to Cloudcroft. When Yvonne was a high school junior in 1952, her family moved to La Luz Canyon to property that had been in the family for years. Yvonne again rode the school bus, but this time to Alamogordo. The White Sands Ranch was owned by Hugh Longwell and he sold it in 1945 to G. B. Oliver. You better get used to that name G. B. Oliver; there could be as many as four of them in this article. G. B. Oliver II and Yvonne built their home by putting two bunk houses together and building over the space between them. For years they added on to that house. Yvonne got along well with the Oliver family. The ranch was isolated but had a steady traffic coming and going. When the Olivers would work the cows, lots of people would show up to work. The ladies would do the cooking for all the hands that were gathering, separating and branding. Most of the butchering was done on the ranch and the meat was sold in the area...more

And what a grand lady she is.
