BLM reconsiders decision to raze mill at American Flat

The federal Bureau of Land Management is reconsidering its decision to demolish a mill site in Storey County more than 80 years after it was abandoned. BLM officials say they have withdrawn their decision on the environmental assessment for the United Comstock Merger Mill because of public concerns that the decision was signed before completion of the review process mandated by the National Historic Preservation Act. They say they’ll continue working with the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation to take into account possible adverse effects to a site that is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. After the review process is completed, the BLM will issue a new decision, which will initiate a new 30-day appeal period. AP
