1 ½ tons of cocaine seized in crackdown

Authorities have seized more than 3,000 pounds of cocaine in a three-year crackdown on a nationwide drug trafficking operation centered near the California-Mexico border. The investigation, dubbed Operation Cerberus, was announced Wednesday. Authorities say Mexico's Sinaloa cartel shipped drugs into Imperial County and then on to other locations in California and other states. The head of the DEA's San Diego office, William Sherman, says the sophisticated operation used the latest technology to track loads and evade the law. Authorities say they wiretapped more than 200 phones during the probe and served dozens of arrest warrants this week in California, Arizona and Oregon. In addition to cocaine, authorities say they seized 100 pounds of methamphetamine, 820 pounds of marijuana and more than $4 million in cash. AP
