Marking the 150th anniversary of the surrender at Appomattox Court House
that effectively ended the Civil War, U.S. Secretary of the Interior
Sally Jewell called on Congress to reauthorize and fully fund the Land
and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) as she joined community partners and
local conservation leaders to highlight the benefits of LWCF to protect

Lee grew to regret his decision to surrender, and so will the Republicans if they surrender on this issue.
Issues of concern to people who live in the west: property rights, water rights, endangered species, livestock grazing, energy production, wilderness and western agriculture. Plus a few items on western history, western literature and the sport of rodeo... Frank DuBois served as the NM Secretary of Agriculture from 1988 to 2003. DuBois is a former legislative assistant to a U.S. Senator, a Deputy Assistant Secretary of Interior, and is the founder of the DuBois Rodeo Scholarship.

I have read several books on the Civil War and only find this assertio that Lee regretted his decision in a few that favored the largely discredited "Lost Cause" point of view.
The source is T. C. Johnson: Life and Letters of Robert Lewis Dabney, and is a quote from Texas Governor Stockdale who had just met with Lee. Admittedly, this is second hand and many scholars dispute its content as not being consistent with other Lee quotes at that time. It did fit nicely, however, with my comments on the Republicans and the LWCF.
Thank you for the follow up.
When it comes to the LWCF, I am amazed at the across the board support of the program by big government and environmental organizations. Many of these organizations also vehemently oppose offshore oil and gas development, not only as an unwatnted activity, but as a utterly evil undertaking. Yet LWCF is largely funded from allocations from offshore oil and gas royalties. I have asked some of them to explain how good can come from evil in this case, and they just kind of mumble...
