VALENTINE, Neb. — Cowboys and canoes. Boots and paddles.Valentine and
sprawling Cherry County — as home of the Niobrara National Scenic River —
are widely recognized as one of Nebraska’s top summer recreational
destinations.But with canoes
and tubes tucked away for the winter, Valentine celebrated its
cattle-ranching and agricultural heritage Saturday with its 16th annual
Heart City Bull Bash.Nearly two dozen premier bull
and heifer producers from across the region showcased dozens of their
critters in temporary pens set up in the middle of Main Street. Quilters
and artists exhibited their wares. The Friends of the Library group
hosted a wine-tasting party showcasing the products of two Nebraska
vineyards. There was a gun show and a 5K fun run.“We
felt Valentine put a lot of emphasis on being a destination location
for tourism — canoeing, fishing and camping — but the livestock industry
and agriculture is the sustaining factor for the community,” said
Marsha Bauer, who was a Valentine hotelier when the community launched

Plus a few items on western history, western literature and the sport of rodeo... Frank DuBois served as the NM Secretary of Agriculture from 1988 to 2003. DuBois is a former legislative assistant to a U.S. Senator, a Deputy Assistant Secretary of Interior, and is the founder of the DuBois Rodeo Scholarship.
