Bob Abbey retiring as U.S. BLM chief

The former Reno-area resident who has served as chief of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management for nearly three years announced on Thursday he is leaving the post late this month. Bob Abbey, appointed by Democratic President Barack Obama to head the BLM in 2009, said he will retire to spend his time with family in Mississippi. “Serving as the BLM director and having the opportunity to work with the most dedicated public servants in all of government has been the highlight of my career,” Abbey said in a statement of a 34-year span working in state and federal government.
