Army removes Pinon Canyon manager

The Pueblo Chieftain reports:

The top Army civilian overseeing the proposed expansion of the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site has been "temporarily reassigned" to other duties pending an administrative investigation, Fort Carson officials said Wednesday. Tom Warren, formerly the deputy garrision commander in charge of the 238,000-acre training range, has been removed from that job as part of an ongoing investigation, according to Col. Eugene Smith, Fort Carson's garrison's commander. "The investigation does not involve (the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site) expansion in any way," Smith said in a statement Wednesday. "Mr. Warren has been temporarily assigned to other duties." Word of Warren's removal in early February has been circulating among opponents of the expansion in recent days. Warren, with his distinctive beard and long-hair, has been involved in the environmental oversight of the training range northeast of Trinidad since the Army established it in 1983. Often the lightning rod who bore the brunt of angry comments from ranchers at public meetings, Warren also was respected by numerous landowners for his environmental work at the current training ground. Warren was in charge of Fort Carson's Directorate of Environmental Compliance and Management until October 2007, when he was made deputy garrison commander with the direct task of managing Pinon Canyon and its expansion. At that time, the Army was hoping to acquire 414,000 more acres around the training ground, but reduced that target to 100,000 acres last summer...

On the contrary! Last week all Environmental personnel were kicked off PCMS - including the cultural resources people. Now no more stupid restrictions will be placed on our ability to train our Soldiers. Not to mention all the promises the environmental rats were making to the Opposition!! We're not required to honor any committments Tom Warren made or any of his people under him made. This is a good thing taxpayers!! Special thanks goes out to Vanessa, Jim, Bruce, Mark, Dan, and Larry for making all of this possible!

"stupid restrictions"? Is the previous post a joke?

The Army took land forcefully from military veterans and American citizens (Republicans and conservatives NO LESS!). They repeatedly broke their promises to those left. This is not what Good Americans do. This is not how we train our military.

This is not "HONOR" Your HOAH! cannot possibly be true as the Marines are honorable individuals and understand the importance of calling out misdeeds of those they serve with, or entities they serve for.

I think your post is a fraud and you should be ashamed of yourself for posing as one of the honorable members of the military.

Land owner, daughter of military veteran, Republican, and outraged American Citizen.

Dear RangeMan

Who exactly are you talking about in your comment "We're not required to honor any committments Tom Warren made or any of his people under him made." Enviromental rats? Are you an idiot? These enviromental people are trying to keep this planet alive for generations to come. Some of these enviromentalist you refer to are also prior military or have active duty family members, or veterans as children, brothers, sisters, mothers, and fathers. So watch who your baggin on. You dont know half of the red tape these people have to go thru to do there jobs. If they have pissed you off personaly then I suggest you brush off your shoulders and move on, but if your the one starting this crap with them I hope you know what your getting into.

Hat's off to the Pueblo Chieftan for their continued coverage of this story and this "distinctively bearded, long-haired" gunslinging character! Life imitating Art imitating Life...like some eerie flashback of the renegade green beret from the 1979 movie "Apocalypse Now" with Brando and Sheen! Hollywood couldn't script this any better! If you haven't seen it, rent it and you'll pick up on the eerie similarities!

Replying to RangeMan: Reading your post I'm almost certain your spell check may have been momentarily disabled... it's enviro-crats (defined as a group of "left of left" wing environmentalists that fly by the seat of their pants, who read more into the intent of any regulation expanding the meaning to ensure long term job security; and still chant global warming mantra as they dig out from a 2 foot snow fall during minus 45 degree windchills). Conversely, enviro-kins (defined as a group of sure-footed "no-spin" environmentalists that simply accept the plain reading of a regulation; identify and involve potential stakeholders early on in the project planning stages; and play nice in the sand box with the neighbors) are skilled at responding to direct questions in a clear, concise, non-evasive manner in under 2 minutes. The Army employs both kinds.

Replying to Outraged American: Not sure I'd be so quick to call out the RangeMan as a fraud. HOAH! is urban slang used by the Army, HOORAH! is used by Marines. The daughter of a military veteran from either branch of service would know the difference.

HOAH!
Rock On!

Dear Landowner:

Your absolutely right “this is not what Good Americans do, and not how we train our military.” You sign a Treaty first, grab the land, break promises, then have the military escort these people to the most worthless tract of land you can find, label it “trust” land, and endlessly whine when they build casinos to become self-sufficient, that they don’t pay tax. That’s what Good Americans do!

Salute!

RE: Whomever posed the rhetorical question in post #3 – “Are you an idiot”?

Read the article again, it says Warren was removed not anyone else. The Garrison Commander was quoted as saying "The investigation does not involve the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site expansion in any way", what’s the problem? If that’s his official statement, it is what it is. Obviously the Army has legitimate concerns about Warrens conduct, performance or business dealings, what ever they might be. Warren’s ominous track record of administrative investigations and transgressions spanning almost 3 decades speaks for itself. Don’t belittle the Army’s discretion or right to call him on the carpet by calling it “crap”. Echoing your own advice: “You dont know half of the red tape these people have to go thru to do there jobs. If they have pissed you off personally then I suggest you brush off your shoulders and MOVE ON! The Army’s assigned a replacement to work with the PCMS expansion project.

Get over it already!

Sounds like the RangeMan been sippin’ a little too much of that there left over DEE-CAM koolaid!

Seriously, at the end of the day, in this new era of transparency perhaps the American taxpaying public will finally learn the truth as to who actually masterminded the proposal to expand this under-utilized training facility. In 1983, Army agreed they wouldn’t come back for more after the first eminent domain condemnation a “Treaty” of sorts and this rogue Warren has always known that was the agreement.

In 2003, less than 20 years later, he sets this expansion plan in motion behind closed doors and sells his conceptual plan through the bubba-network to the Army powers that be without involving or considering all of the affected adjacent landowners.

If the Army can justify its needs for more space to conduct multi-force “real world” training, I hear tell Navy has a 45 square mile piece of real estate off the coast of Florida with an ocean view they won’t be needing anymore. Comes complete with a Treaty in place, buildings, a “potable” water supply and a wider variety of terrain to simulate real world multi-force training applications! According to the new administration, it should be available within a year! Plenty of room for expansion there!

In response to blog #7 above, "Obviously the Army has legitimate concerns...Don’t belittle the Army’s discretion or right to call him on the carpet..."

Ever heard of McCarthyism? Please let me educate you, my fine unqualified, callow friend: From the Encarta English Dictionary: McCarthyism - 1. Public accusations...the practice of publicly accusing somebody, especially somebody in government or the media, of subversive... activities... especially without real evidence to substantiate this; 2. Unfair accusation or investigation of people: the practice of using unsubstantiated accusations or unfair methods of investigation to discredit people.

The Army does not use Pinon Canyon, no more than a company at a time. Tom was moved out of the way by over zealous Range folks, with a god complex. They want to use historic ranch houses as mount sites and destroy the land.Pinon will never be the same, and it will be the end of historic sites as we know it.

Range is going to limit or eliminate hunting on Pinon in direct violation of the Sikes Act,use historic ranch houses for troop training, and eliminate enviromental controls. Tom was the road block, that range wanted to get rid of, they won Pinon lost.

People! People! Settle down..it's all good! Fort Carson's Range Management is now in control!! And through their altruistic efforts they have convinced the powers that be in the Army to see the errors of their ways and have gallantly backed off of PCMS expansion. They heard the voice of the people and they truly listened! No more fighting the good citizens of La Junta, Kim, and Trinidad. No, like good, loyal Americans they will seek training lands elsewhere.

Anybody actually buying that crap? Have any of you ever met some of the unscrupulous hoodwinkers that manage subject training lands? The following is an elaborate rumor that's floating about but because it involves our FC/PCMS Range Charlatans - I'm inclined to believe at least parts of it: Their strategy is to back off of expending funds to purchase lands for now. They will, instead, get busy using those earmarked funds for building all the infrastructure required for a big time training site. Now that the Big Bearded Barrier is being held captive in Principal Eugenies' office, certain areas of PCMS can be freed up for use. Just gotta spend a few $mils to relocate that darn pipeline. (Thanks NL,Jr and BS for that lil tidbit.)

Oh, and its also rumored they plan to build a live fire artillery training range there and fully expect after a few years of being in operstion, neighboring good citizens will be less reluctant to sell.

I sure do hope that you're all proud of yourselves, people, to include some very close to me, have spent the majority of their adult lives bonding with the people of Pinon, helping them when they did not understand why the army was being so greedy and trying their hardest to make sure that what was unfair and unjust was not carried out upon them, but you "rangemen" had to keep pushing and pushing like most American Government entities have done in the present and through out history (ask the native americans), it all makes me sick to my stomach. As if the largest training facilities in America in Ft. Carson wasn't enough... anyway, as someone above has said, get over it already because there will not be much to be said from here out, But as for your "stupid restrictions placed on your ability to train your soldiers" ahahahaha, I've never heard such a funny joke, maybe you guys could learn to train them in how not to despise those above them, return a little honor to the "volunteer" ARMY, and maybe then there would not be record #'s of suicides... but I digress, if you're one of the ones out there that are making claims that Tom Warren is at all in any way some sort of a bad person, you're sadly and terribly mistaken.

Range Control has had a serious theft problems at Pinon, CID won't do anthing about it and the IG would not touch it. The people that steal from our troops work with ICOM, and still work at Pinon. Their the ones running the show, goverment employees who steal from our soldiers.

Dan, Bob, Scottie I am glad you guys sleep on the same land. When the investigation focuses on Pinon they will be looking at you.
