Legendary Indian Rodeo Cowboy Gunned Down In Grants
Fans across New Mexico are remembering a legendary Indian Rodeo Cowboy, who was one of two men gunned down in a double murder case outside of Grants. Detectives believe a fight over property lines started it. Rodeo star Sonny Jim and his friend, Wayne Johnson, both men in their 70s, died in that shooting. Deputies say they’ve arrested the gunman, but that’s little comfort to the fans of the legendary cowboy Sonny Jim. “He was up in age and he was still here steer wrestling and we're probably going to miss that part,” said fan John Boyd. Like other rodeo fans, John Boyd will miss Sonny Jim… a world champion cowboy in the 1980s from the Navajo nation. He was remembered Sunday at the International Indian Rodeo Finals in Farmington.
