Issues of concern to people who live in the west: property rights, water rights, endangered species, livestock grazing, energy production, wilderness and western agriculture. Plus a few items on western history, western literature and the sport of rodeo... Frank DuBois served as the NM Secretary of Agriculture from 1988 to 2003. DuBois is a former legislative assistant to a U.S. Senator, a Deputy Assistant Secretary of Interior, and is the founder of the DuBois Rodeo Scholarship.
OH yes, they have certainly gone off the deep end but what do we expect when not one rancher or agriculture leadership group responds with the truth? We are not doing our share at all. And they are using the media to the best of their ability to sway the management of the program and even impact court decisions. I guess they just care more about it than either ranchers or the industry does. Critical? Maybe but sick of the lackadaisical attitude displayed by those on our side of this.
The Arizona Repugnant went off the deep end decades ago. Like the LA Times, but dumber and possibly nastier these days.
I am in agreement with Anonymous. If you give an inch, they'll take the whole damn ruler, and our group as a whole does not get this. Waiting it out or pretending it does not exist will not settle this in a way agreeable to us. This is a theme that I have preached on for some time. At one time, there were people within the NRA that wanted to leave it as the little group that set the standards for bullseyes, too, and didn't want to "get political." Sorry, folks, but whether or not you want to "get political," it looks like political has gotten you.
Contrary to the gobbledygook about the "powerful" industry, the industry groups roll over and play dead more often than they stand and fight. The language of the fight has long since been ceded to the activists. All you need to verify this is see the endless articles in any horse or stock publication that are now dedicated to animal rightists' pet issues.
We can do better than this, especially with today's technology. That is why I am delighted to see blogs like this sprouting up, and with the rise of groups like R-CALF, and with new Western Songs and literature that tell the modern story from our perspective. Rest assured, there are folks out there who have taken this up. It isn't going to be pretty, but I think we can get the job done in a way we all can live with.
