Green chile harvest booms in New Mexico

It’s an October surprise for fans of New Mexico's most famous and most popular crop. A late season surge of fresh green chile is set to leave farms across New Mexico, as farmers say early forecasts for a small harvest seem to be out of whack. "There's still chile, we're trying to sell it to you," laughed Steve Sichler. "There's a lot to be sold. A lot of people think that it's kinda run out now that the grocery stores quit selling it, but there's still a lot to be had out here." The roasters are busy at Sichler Farms Produce in Los Lunas, and the chile keeps coming in by the truckload. It's looking like a bigger and better harvest than anybody expected. Farmers say they will be harvesting the long green for the next two or three weeks, with plenty left over to ripen and turn red for ristras and chile powder...more
