Paraguay confirms second foot-and-mouth outbreak
Paraguay has confirmed another foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in the same area where hundreds of cattle had to be sacrificed last year. The disease is highly infectious among cloven-hoofed animals and most countries ban imports from places suffering outbreaks to protect their cattle industries. Because the government finished giving booster vaccines to half a million cattle in the northern department of San Pedro last week, officials worry there is something wrong with their system. Animal health director Daniel Rojas said Monday that 170 of 194 cows owned by the same rancher are infected. Paraguay has resumed exports from outside the affected area. AP
