The entrenched environmental oversight of Federal land agencies

by Howard Hutchinson

Alston Chase’s book “Playing God in Yellowstone” describes how easily science can be subverted by politics and ideology and that so called environmentalists are at the top of the list of contributors to the destruction of the park.  Biocentrism has become the religion of these organizations that promote preservation over use.  The subversion has infiltrated the ranks of the land management agencies.

Mr. Chase’s second book on the subject “In a Dark Wood” attributes the decline of proper management of our National Forests to political correct advancement of personnel over education and experience in resource management.  Added to this was the advent of conservation biology’s movement into college curriculum.  As the old guard foresters left the service the new ecologists took their place.

One of the creators of conservation biology was Reed Noss.  Dr. Noss teamed up with Earth First founder Dave Forman to develop the Wild Lands Project.  The project was designed to turn 50% of America into wilderness core area surrounded by buffer zones interspersed with “islands of human occupation.”

It is no coincidence that the Global Biodiversity Assessment (Assessment, the implementing document for the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (Treaty), uses the Wildlands Project as an example of how the whole planet needs to be managed.  The funding organizations for the project were the Nature Conservancy and Audubon Society.  Agenda 21 is the guide developed for implementing the Treaty and it is designed to regulate every aspect of your life.  The Nature Conservancy, Audubon Society, Sierra Club, World Wildlife Fund along with other non-governmental environmental organizations provided the primary input into the development of the Assessment.

These organizations pushed for the adoption of the Biodiversity Treaty.  It was signed by President Clinton in 1993 but failed ratification by the Senate.  The treaty was thwarted by Henry Lamb, Tom McDonald and Dr. Michael Coffman in the last twenty-four hours before the vote.  Not to be denied the treaty was implemented through Clinton’s Executive Order No. 12852 creating the President’s Council on Sustainable Development (Council).

The Council created “Towards a Sustainable America: Advancing Prosperity, Opportunity, and a Healthy Environment for the 21st Century” in May, 1999 (Report).  Another Executive Order by President Clinton commands all federal agencies to take the necessary actions to implement the Report’s recommendations and placed the EPA in charge of that implementation.

The federal land management agencies were already well on their way to failure in land and resource management by the time the onslaught of the new religion infiltrated their ranks.  With marching orders in place from the president and ideological fervor they have moved to clear humans from the federal lands in the west and the rural private lands of the east.  Sustainable development is their battle cry and people, cities and counties lie devastated in the wake of their passing.

All of these facts are easily available on-line to those who wish to learn.  Without understanding the source of the problem one will not be able to remedy it.  Do yourself and the nation a favor and begin connecting the dots to the sources of the problems.
