NMSU rodeo dominates spring opener

New Mexico State University men’s and women’s rodeo teams took the top spot this weekend at the Cochise College Rodeo in Fort Huachuca, Ariz.

Taking first place in more than half of the events, NMSU beat out the competition by more than 200 points.

“I was very excited to see the team come back as strong and even stronger after such a long break in our season,” NMSU rodeo coach Jim Brown said. This was the first spring semester rodeo for the team.

Tyke Kipp and Nicole Sweazea of NMSU received All-Around titles for excellence in the arena.

“I am proud to see our women’s team step up and take home a win. There were so many standout performances from the team at this rodeo, but Tyke and Nicole really stood out and brought home both All-Around titles,” Brown said.

Riders to take first place were Trenten Montero in bareback, Tyke Kipp in saddlebronc riding, Meghan Johnson in barrels and Colt Capurro for steer wrestling.

The teams took second in goat tying, tie-down and team roping.

The next rodeo will be on March 15-16 in Florence, Ariz.
