White House Calls for Action Plan to Address Antibiotic Resistance
The White House announced Thursday its plan to make the issue of antibiotic resistance a national priority. In addition to the release of the much-anticipated President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) report on antibiotic resistance requested by President Obama last year, there are three related developments. These include an Executive Order (EO) establishing an interagency
task force for combating antibiotic-resistant bacteria, the release of
the administration’s National Strategy on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant
Bacteria, and a $20-million prize, co-sponsored by the National
Institutes of Health and the Biomedical Advanced Research and
Development Authority, for developing rapid, point-of-care diagnostic
tests for identifying highly resistant bacterial infections. “Controlling the development and spread of antibiotic resistance is a
top national security and public health priority for this
administration,” said John Holdren, director of the White House Office
of Science and Technology Policy and assistant to the president, during a
