It is the little-known secret that many rodeo fans do not know about six-time World Champion Tie-Down Roper, Cody Ohl. He is known for consistently turning in 8 seconds runs on each calf he ropes, but one thing some people don’t know about Cody Ohl is that until the age of 17 he rode calves, steers and bulls for 8 seconds at a time and was a serious contender. His love of bull riding never really went away.
He always had a love for the roughstock events and he rode very well, but just knew roping was the event where he was going to excel and become a world champion. To avoid getting hurt he focused on the roping events, but later on in his career he returned the discipline that he loves in an unexpected way.
Ohl got involved with the breeding aspect of bucking bulls and now provides bulls at different roughstock events across the country and he is beginning to make a name for himself in a whole new event. Mack Altizer from Bad Company Rodeo got him started in the bucking bull business with a couple of heifers and his breeding program took off from that point. Ohl then started breeding and buying more top bloodline females and at one time a couple years ago his herd included 100 head of cows and 40 bulls. Ohl now just puts his focus on his best 45 females and his best 30 bulls.
He raised the World Champion Futurity bull in 2009 named Pure Smoke, which is a huge accomplishment and very profitable. Ohl won right at $200,000 that year through his bucking bull production business...
