Plague still a threat in Lake Tahoe
Plague was detected in the Lake Tahoe area last summer, and as the weather warms up, so does the potential danger of the deadly disease.
After the initial discovery a little over a year ago, the Lake Tahoe Basin Forest Services wants to keep the public aware that the naturally occurring bacterial disease remains a threat in the area. The disease becomes more common when the summer days hit due to an increase in activity of plague-infected fleas and animals.
“The signs are always up on the campgrounds, to alert people that they’re in an area that is known to carry plague,” said Lisa Herron, public affairs specialist of the Lake Tahoe Basin Forest Services
Herron said that while the plague is readily treatable, the biggest mistake in combatting the disease is ignoring the associated symptoms and not taking the proper precautions...more
