Merle Haggard to be honored with memorial highway
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - He was born in Oildale and raised in a boxcar, now the late great country music legend Merle Haggard is getting his own memorial highway.
At the request of state Senator Ted Gaines who represents Shasta County where Haggard lived, the Interstate 5 and State Highway Route 44 overpass will be designated the Merle Haggard Memorial Overpass.
Thanks to help from Redding's KNCQ-FM radio station, funds were raised by selling T-shirts featuring the overpass signage.
Haggard died at his Palo Cedro home on his 79th birthday April 6, 2016.
It will take Caltrans a few months to receive the signs, then dedicate them. A dedication ceremony is planned Oct. 25. link
