Formery armory in Las Cruces sheltering migrants after other locations reach capacity
The city of Las Cruces said the former U.S Army Reserve Center in Las Cruces, located at 1300 Brown Road, took in its first group of asylum seekers Wednesday afternoon.
Udell Vigil, communications director for Las Cruces, said about 25 asylum seekers will spend the night at the armory after other locations reached capacity.
Vigil said the facility is not equipped to process paperwork yet and will only serve as an overnight shelter.
The city chose the former armory as the location of its long-term shelter for migrants in late April. The new shelter should be able to host up to 170 migrants when it is officially opened. KFOX14
