Al Green to force impeachment vote following incendiary Trump tweets; Conservative pundits say 'single stupidest act of Trump’s presidency'; Trump fires back

Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) said Monday that he plans to force a vote on impeachment this month following President Trump’s inflammatory tweets telling a group of progressive Democratic congresswomen to "go back" to where they came from. Green — who first unsuccessfully forced a vote on impeachment in 2017, with just 58 Democrats supporting the effort on the floor — said he feels he needs to take action due to the president’s recent rhetoric. "I will again, this month, bring impeachment to a vote on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives for bigotry in policy, harmful to our society," he tweeted. In a press conference streamed on Facebook Live, the Texas Democrat said he plans to move forward before Congress breaks for its August recess, adding “to tolerate bigotry is to perpetuate bigotry, especially when you can do something about it.” “I'm a member of the House of Representatives, and I as a member can do something about it," Green said. "Each member of the House of Representatives can bring articles of impeachment to the floor of the House of Representatives. Democrat Poll Shows What Voters Think Of Omar, Ocasio-Cortez

A new internal Democrat poll in swing districts released on Sunday showed that socialist Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) are extremely unpopular and that they may cost the Democratic Party the presidency and the House in 2020. "Ocasio-Cortez was recognized by 74% of voters in the poll; 22% had a favorable view," Axios reported. "Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota — another member of The Squad — was recognized by 53% of the voters; 9% (not a typo) had a favorable view." "Socialism was viewed favorably by 18% of the voters and unfavorably by 69%," Axios added, whereas "capitalism was 56% favorable; 32% unfavorable." The firm that conducted the poll gave the results to Axios on the condition that it not be named because it works "with all parts of the party." A top Democrat involved in the 2020 congressional races told Axios: "If all voters hear about is AOC, it could put the [House] majority at risk. [S]he's getting all the news and defining everyone else’s races. Socialism is toxic to these voters."...

Regular readers know that I am a fan of President Trump, and more often than not, a fan of his use of social media. But today he committed the worst unforced error of his presidency, one that we will hear about from the Democrats from now until November 2020.
This morning the president tweeted about “‘Progressive’ Democratic Congresswomen”:

 
...The Democrats have been self-destructing, with the progressives denouncing Nancy Pelosi and other members of the party’s leadership as racists. That conflict has dominated the news, and I am sure Trump is right that Nancy Pelosi would be happy to work out travel arrangements to get rid of the Squad. But now she won’t have to. Trump’s attack on the Squad was so foolish that I would assume it to be a case of drunk-tweeting, except that the President doesn’t drink.
This is the headline in my home town paper, the Minneapolis Star Tribune. It will be the same in every newspaper across the country:

 

Note that the Associated Press accuses Trump of “starkly injecting race into his criticism of liberal Democrats.” But Trump didn’t say a word about race. It was the AP that starkly injected race into the controversy. Which, of course, doesn’t excuse the single stupidest act of Trump’s presidency. 

Jim Geraghty at National Review writes: 

In an act of political stupidity that is simply jaw-dropping, Trump manages to focus in on the least-legitimate lines of criticism, that these women supposedly come from some other country and that they are “loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run.” They’re all elected members of Congress. Love them or hate them, they all legitimately won House races in heavily Democratic congressional districts. Each one has the same one vote out of 435 that every other member has.
At the exact moment that Democrats are realizing the toxicity of identity politics, Donald Trump endorses the notion that these women are defined by where they come from.
Not only did he attack the “squad,” he managed to do it in a way in which no other prominent Democrat can continue to criticize them publicly, lest they be perceived as echoing the president’s contention that they should go back where they came from. At the exact moment the accusations and counter-accusations were set to do lasting damage, Trump just had to jump in and give them an attack that would unify them all. It often seems like Trump would rather have a bad news cycle that focuses on him than a beneficial news cycle that focuses on someone else.
Trump could have and should have stayed quiet and let the Democratic infighting worsen and intensify.

Trump steps up attacks on minority congresswomen

President Trump on Monday stepped up his attacks on four progressive, minority Democratic lawmakers, which were widely condemned by Democrats — and some Republicans — as racist and unbecoming of an American president.
One day after Trump said the four women should “go back” to their home countries, even though all are U.S. citizens, the president denied he was being racist and expressed no remorse when told that white nationalist groups found common cause with his message.
“It doesn’t concern me because many people agree with me,” Trump told reporters on the South Lawn of the White House during an event highlighting American manufacturing.
Trump said the lawmakers “hate our country,” harbor hatred of Jews and love for terrorist groups and are “free to leave” the U.S. if they choose.
“They can leave. And you know what? I’m sure there will be many people that won’t miss them. But they have to love our country. They’re congresspeople,” he said.

President Trump Obliterates Ilhan Omar at the White House, Gets Massive Cheers

Speaking from the White House Monday afternoon President Trump blasted Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and recommended those who hate America should leave the country.
"I'm watching them and all they do is complain. All I'm saying is if they want to leave they can leave. I mean I look at the one, Omar, I've never met her and the way she talks about Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda has killed many Americans. She said 'you can hold your chest out. When I think of America, huh. When I think of Al Qaeda I can hold my chest out.' She talked about the World Trade Center being knocked down, 'some people' you remember the famous 'some people," Trump said. “These are people who in my opinion hate our country."
“If you’re not happy here, then you can leave.  As far as I’m concerned, if you hate our country, if you’re not happy here you can leave. That’s what I say all the time. That’s what I said in a tweet that I guess some people think is controversial. A lot of people love it, by the way. A lot of people love it. But if you’re not happy in the U.S., if you’re complaining all the time, very simply you can leave. You can leave right now. You can come back if you want, don’t come back, that’s ok, too,” he continued.
The comments came at the end of the annual Made in America event where U.S companies showcase their products at the White House. During questioning from reporters about Omar, some attendees at the event started cheering President Trump's answers.

Pelosi Introduces Resolution to Condemn Trump's 'Xenophobic' Tweets

President Trump is getting swift bipartisan pushback for a tweet he sent directing four freshman progressive lawmakers to "go back" to their home countries since all they seem to want to do is bash America. Those include Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ayanna Pressley (MA), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who was born in Somalia.
Ocasio-Cortez was among those who demanded the president apologize for his "racist" message. She was joined by Republicans like William Hurd, who agreed Trump's tweet was "racist and xenophobic," and "inaccurate."
Trump did the opposite during his fiery remarks in the Rose Garden on Monday. He doubled down.
"If you're not happy in the U.S., you can leave," he said...

Progressive ‘Squad’ Holds Special Presser to Demand Impeachment 

Four progressive Democratic congresswomen held a press conference Monday calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump in the wake of comments he directed at them on Twitter.
Reps. Ayanna Pressley (D., Mass.), Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.), and Rashida Tlaib (D., Mich.) denounced Trump's tweets and called for the House to begin proceedings against him. Omar cited "mass deportations" and "human rights abuses at the border," echoing many Democrats who have denounced the Trump administration's border security policies.
"This president, who has been credibly accused of committing multiple crimes, including colluding with a foreign government to interfere with our election," Omar said, drawing conclusions that do not square with former Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report, which did not find collusion with Russia. "This is a president who has overseen the most corrupt administration in our history and pursued an agenda to allow millions of Americans to die from a lack of health care while he transfers millions of dollars in tax cuts to corporations."...
