With one month left in the 2019 PRCA season, it’s a mad dash to the
finish line. The 30 ProRodeo competitions held across North America,
Aug. 19-25, presented $1.6 million in opportunities for cowboys to
improve their positions within the PRCA | RAM World Standings.
With so much money up for grabs, 29 cowboys saw their positions improve
within the Top 15, largely thanks to successful trips to last week’s
biggest rodeos.
Four of last week’s competitions featured six-figure payouts, two of which were ProRodeo Tour events: the Horse Heaven / Kennewick (Wash.) Round-Up at $325,190 and the Kitsap Stampede in Bremerton, Wash., at $152,006. The other two that broke the six-figure mark were the Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., at $264,625 and the Colorado State Fair & Rodeo in Pueblo, Colo., at $101,262.
Cowboys know it’s easier to maintain a position at the top than it is to
play catch-up when trying to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals
Rodeo. Every dollar counts, and making the Top 15 in the world standings
during the summer run builds a cowboy’s confidence and establishes a
foundation for the race for the gold buckle at the Wrangler NFR.
Nobody knows this better than steer wrestler Tyler Pearson,
who jumped six spots last week, from 13th to seventh, thanks to picking
up $6,843 in San Juan Capistrano and $4,838 in Kennewick.
The Mississippi cowboy was the 2017 PRCA Steer Wrestling World Champion
and is a three-time qualifier for the Wrangler NFR (2013, 2017-18). He
also won this year’s RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee, Fla.
With some of the biggest checks on the line in the coming weeks, big jumps like Pearson’s are sure to happen again.
