Peppers Pride, the New Mexico-bred mare who gained national attention going undefeated in 19 career starts, was euthanized Sept. 19 due to complications from laminitis, BloodHorse reports.
The 16-year-old resided at Taylor Made Farm in Nicholasville, Ky., where she most recently delivered a California Chrome filly on Feb. 10.
The daughter of Desert God raced as a homebred for Joseph Allen, making all 19 of her starts in New Mexico. Over four seasons of racing from ages two to five, she won 14 stakes races and compiled earnings of $1,066,085. Trained by Joel Marr, Peppers Pride was named New Mexico's champion 2-year-old, 3-year-old, and twice champion older female, and she won races from 5 1/2 furlongs to a mile.
Peppers Pride equaled the modern North American record for consecutive wins in April 2008, when she won the Russell and Helen Foutz Distaff Handicap at Sunray Park, joining Cigar, Citation, Hallowed Dreams, and Mister Frisky at 16 victories in a row. She firmly surpassed her contemporaries when she retired after victory number 19 at the end of the 2008 racing season. She was eventually joined at that mark by Hall of Famer Zenyatta and surpassed by Mid-Atlantic standout Rapid Redux at 22 wins.
Peppers Pride still holds the North American record for consecutive victories by an undefeated horse, but she was soon unseated for the modern world record when Australian superstar Black Caviar went undefeated in 25 career starts, racing from 2008 to 2013...
