A Massachusetts man was able to protect his wife and their dog from a pack of coyotes by using a push broom.
Dianne Andre said at around 8 p.m. Sunday, she was out their 85-pound Rottweiler-German shepherd mix, Storm, in the front yard when a group of three or four coyotes emerged from the woods and came running at them. "It was like a horror movie," she said. "Their eyes, I mean all of them, just looking at you like, 'We've got you!' They seemed like they were strategically planting themselves."
That is when Keith Andre heard his wife scream for help.
“We had just got home, so I came out running through the garage and grabbed a broom,” he said. “It was the first thing I could find to try to hit them.”
Keith Andre said he had to choose between a broom and a rake in the heat of the moment, and it appears the broom was the right choice.
He was able to scare the coyotes away, but the experience was a frightening wake-up call about how aggressive coyotes can be.
"If you think you've got a big dog and he's immune to coyotes -- you saw the size of my dog and he's not very friendly -- they outnumbered him," Keith Andre said. "(Storm is) not afraid of anything, but (coyotes) are breeding now," Dianne Andre said. "It's frightening. Large dogs, also, please take heed."
Southborough police have issued a warning to residents, telling them not to leave their small dogs or children outside alone.
