Redskins set to 'retire' team name on Monday
The Washington Redskins are expected to announce Monday that it will retire their team nickname, according to Sports Business Daily.
The report comes a day after Yahoo Sports indicated that a name change for the team was imminent within 24 to 48 hours. Sports Business Daily, however, reports that a new name is not expected to be immediately announced because “trademark issues are pending.”
On July 3, the Redskins announced they were conducting a “thorough review” of their name following pressure from activist groups and corporations to take action. FedEx, the team’s naming rights partner whose CEO is part of the Redskins ownership group, had said it asked the Redskins to change their name. Washington Times
