Beginning in 1952, New Mexico Cattle Growers Association set about awarding an individual for their dedicated, selfless service to NMCGA, fellow members, community, state and nation. The Board of Directors nominates and selects each year’s honoree. Appreciating an individual that remains true to the associations’ task at hand; to protect and preserve the generational lifestyle of New Mexico producers.

Born and raised in Tombstone, AZ on her family owned ranch since the 1880’s, Caren Cowan grew up with those that made their living with cattle and horses. No stranger to the lifestyle and with love for reading and writing; Caren pursued a degree in Agriculture Communications from the University of Arizona, graduating in 1975.  Caren began working for the Arizona National Livestock Show as the advertising director, thereafter becoming the shows office manager and handling the publication and distribution of their industry newsletter. Looking for a change, Caren moved to Texas to work for the American Red Brangus Association producing their breed magazine. In the late 80’s Caren moved to Ruidoso, becoming the Executive Director of the NM Wool Growers in 1990. Successfully navigating the difficult waters of government affairs, lobbying and litigation; Caren was then hired as the NM Cattle Growers Executive Director in 1997. Serving the association for twenty-three years, Caren led the change on several court cases, federal grazing allotment issues, Bureau of Land Management permits, private property issues and legislative sessions. Further, working to educate legislators on the policies of the association, training president elects in the art of lobbying, as well as the planning of multiple conventions and meetings. Since 2009, Caren has been the owner/publisher of the NM Stockman Magazine; the top trade publication for the cattle industry in New Mexico as well as the entire Southwest. For years of dedication to the industry and beef producers, the NMCGA is proud to present Caren Cowan as the 2020 Cattleman of the Year.

Why do organizations do this? Treat a hard worker horribly then ease them out then when they figure out their members are disgusted by the behavior they hand over an award? CAREN devotes herself to our industry. An award and apology is more like it.
