New Mexico lawmaker introduces gun safety bill

As the legislative session approaches on Tuesday, one of New Mexico’s lawmakers hopes her bill – aimed at preventing school shootings – gets considered.

...Here's what the bill would do: if a parent or guardian doesn't securely store their gun away from children and a child uses that gun to commit a crime, the parent or guardian could face criminal charges, ranging from a misdemeanor to a felony.

"So for example, if a minor accesses a gun, brandishes it, takes it into a place where they shouldn't be taking it and causing a lot of mayhem, then what we are asking for is a $1,000 penalty and a misdemeanor, because no one has lost their life. But when there is the loss of life involved with a firearm that has not been stored securely, we're saying it's your gun your responsibility and you will be responsible for the penalty that incurred and the penalty that we're looking at is a 4th degree penalty, a 4th degree felony," said Herndon...MORE

This clearly is a gun control bill.

..."there's been some shooting or some other violent act involving guns," said Herndon

If the violent act involves a knife, a club, a vehicle, etc., the adults would not be subject to this legislation.  These other violent acts are apparently of no interest to proponents, just those with guns. Why? Because this is a gun control bill.

Dear Mr. Dubois, I find it interesting that you've taken a knee-jerk, very "Republican" attitude toward this proposal. Of course it is a gun control bill. We, as Americans, have proven we no longer have mental or moral accumen necessary to control our private firearms. In the first 17 days of January 2022 there have been 19 mass shootings in the USA (according to Gun Violence Archives 2022); there have been 62 American kids killed and 156 injured by firearms. Having a child in school nowadays is like playing a lottery to see if they make it home safely at the end of the day. Any law that would help solve this situation should be considered. I own a lot of firearms, have used them on a daily basis as a professional hunter/trapper; I have a concealed carry permit and use it. What I no longer have is a membership with the NRA or any patience with people who use tribal metaphors to proclaim their allegiance and love of the 2nd Amendment. Let the parents be responsible for their own kids and their own firearms (just like they're responsible for a vicious dog) - as you mentioned, their offspring will still be allowed to kill someone with a knife, a club, or a vehicle without getting their parents in too much hot water.
