Nestlé, Unilever and others form animal welfare coalition

Seven companies including Nestlé, Unilever and Ikea Food Services have joined forces to form the Global Coalition for Animal Welfare (GCAW), which will aim to advance the global welfare standard of animals in the food supply chain. Aramark, Compass Group, Elior Group and Sodexo are also part of the GCAW, and all companies involved in the coalition will work with animal welfare experts to accelerate the development of high welfare standards. According to statistics provided by the GCAW, more than 70 billion animals are farmed for food annually, with over 70% of these living in intensive systems, often experiencing poor welfare standards. GCAW members have established five core goals to address this issue: Cage-free policies, improved broiler chicken welfare, farmed fish welfare, antimicrobial resistance, and global standards for transportation and slaughter...The coalition stated that the global food system “must maintain high levels of food safety for animal ingredients, address challenges like antimicrobial resistance and mitigate the environmental impact of new approaches.”...MORE
