Thousands of dead fish are floating in the Kentucky River after a 23-mile-long spill of alcohol was dumped into the water during a huge fire at a Jim Beam bourbon warehouse.
The environmental disaster occurred after water from firefighters' hoses used to put out the blaze ran off into the river, carrying some of the 45,000 barrels of whisky that went up in smoke with it. Authorities were aerating the water in the hope that, along with rainfall, would reduce the concentration of alcohol.
The fire broke out at the warehouse in Versaille on Tuesday night, completely destroying the building and damaging an adjacent warehouse.
EEC spokesman John Mura said on Thursday that the remains of the warehouse was being allowed to burn out by themselves, in a bid to stpop remaining spirits from running off into the river.
