NMSU rodeo team welcomes new coach, heads to national finals
Brice Baggarley fulfilled a longtime dream when he took the helm of the New Mexico State University rodeo team last month. The Washington state native who most recently served as the head athletic trainer at Mayfield High School in Las Cruces began his new role as head coach of the NMSU rodeo team on May 3, overseeing the men’s and women’s divisions.
Baggarley hails from a rodeo family and has deep connections to the NMSU team. He was a team member from 2011 to 2013 as an undergraduate and later served as an assistant coach from 2013 to 2015. He graduated from NMSU in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training.
“I rodeoed growing up. I went through the ranks of junior rodeos to high school rodeos, then college rodeos and amateur rodeos,” he said. “I also was a pickup man at many college rodeos while I was the assistant coach at NMSU.”
Baggarley said his father, Daniel, who unexpectedly died in December, was an influential figure in his life and encouraged him to apply for the head coaching position before his death.
“We dreamed I would become the NMSU rodeo coach,” he said. “It’s kind of cool to think my dad got to see me get the job from heaven – and I believe he had a lot to do with it."
Baggarley inherits a team that faced unprecedented challenges over the past year.
For much of the 2020-2021 season, the roughly 40 students on the team were on their own without a full-time head coach but received support from their advisor, Donald Connor, and other faculty and staff from the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. Pandemic-related restrictions also made it impossible for the students to practice as a team.
“Most of them are at home, and I would venture to guess that 99 percent of them are practicing in some way every single day,” he said.
Their hard work paid off, and the team completed the regular season with a string of victories.
The women’s team finished first in the Grand Canyon Region standings while the men’s team finished fourth. Three students Bethanie Shofner (breakaway), Jayde Wamel (barrel racing) and Vinell Mariano (bull riding) were named regional champions.
Ten student-athletes also qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming, set for June 11-19. The finalists include Shofner, Kaitlyn Harwell, Abbie Shofner and McKenzie Frizell, who will compete in breakaway roping; Mariano, Zane Tully and Bo Tyler Vocu, who will compete in bull riding; Wamel (barrel racing); Baylee Johnston (goat tying); and Jesse Hay-Smith (bareback riding).
“The fact that they have the self-motivation to soar to these heights without a coach or organized practice is incredible,” Baggarley said, “and now, they’re qualified to compete at the national level.”
Baggarley is hopeful the 2021-2022 season will look a normal, pre-pandemic season when the team returns from summer break in August. He and his students are looking forward to practicing as a team for the first time in more than a year at the NMSU rodeo grounds, he said.
For his first season as head coach, Baggarley’s priorities include rebuilding relationships with the community and establishing name recognition for the team. He will also focus much of his energy on fundraising and bringing back the tradition of hosting two college rodeos – one of which will be the regional finals next April.
“We’re looking to get back out in the public and get our names back out there,” he said. “The NMSU rodeo team is incredibly fortunate to have the support of Las Cruces community.”
Baggarley, who still competes in team roping events, wants others to think of rodeos as family-friendly events – much like he does.
“There are great-grandpas who are team-roping at 90 years old and little kids who are in the jackpots at 8, 9, 10 years old,” he said. “That’s what I like the most about this sport – it surrounds you with family and friends, which is very rewarding.” LINK

New NMSU Rodeo Coach
Dr. Donald Conner announced yesterday that Brice Baggarley has accepted the offer to be the next rodeo coach at NMSU. He will start on May 3.
Brice competed on the NMSU rodeo team and from August of 2013 till May of 2015 was the assistant rodeo coach under Jim Dewey Brown.
Welcome aboard Brice! We all look forward to working with you and helping any way we can.
I must say that NMSU must come up with a better, more flexible procedure for hiring a rodeo coach. When Jim Dewey Brown left, the team was left without a coach for the fall semester. Logan Corbett's resignation was affective on May 1, 2020. Here we are a full year later before a new coach takes over. This selection was complicated by some legislative language and COVID-19, but that is no excuse for taking 12 months to fill this position. The Athletic Department has special provisions in the personnel code for hiring coaches and ACES deserves the same. I guarantee you if this had been a basketball coach, the long delay would not have occurred. The system may be fine for hiring a professor or regular staff, but does not give us the tools and options needed to hire a rodeo coach. The students and their parents deserve better.

NMSU Women's Rodeo Team is NIRA Regional Champion
Congrats to the ladies!
All three CNFR qualifiers in the breakaway roping event are from NMSU
1 Bethanie Shofner 2. Kaitland Harwell 3 Abbie Shofner
Jade Wamel is the champion barrel racer for the region, Sierra Spratt placed 3rd in the all around and Baylee Johnston is a CNFR qualifier in the goat tying.
A great performance by the women, especially considering they had NO COACH for the entire season.
The Boys Team placed 4th, and has all three of the bull riding spots for the CNFR and one qualifier in the bareback riding.
You can see all of the regional standings here.

A nice article about John Pete winning the average at the Turquoise Circuit Finals just like his father before him. It's nice to see a recipient of the DuBois Rodeo Scholarship do so well. And fyi, that is Chris Allison's horse he's mounted on. You can read the article here.

DuBois Award recipients
The DuBois Award is a Curtis Fort original bronze presented to the all-around cowboy and all-around cowgirl at NMSU each year. Recipients are determined by NIRA points won in more than one event.
We had had no rodeo coach in the Fall of 2015 so there was no bronc riding & calf roping event and no awards were presented at that time. We made up for that at the awards luncheon this year and had the recipients for the 2014-2015 season and the 2015-2016 season present.
Here is some info and pics of the recipients, plus I would like to add my appreciation to each of these outstanding student-athletes and thank them for being part of the NMSU rodeo program. We raise money for scholarships each year so we can attract this type of individual to NMSU.

NMSU rodeo steals the spotlight in last rodeo of the season
Writer: Jocelyn N. Apodaca
“I am very proud of the teams, they competed well and finished the fall season off on top,” NMSU rodeo coach Jim Brown said.
Cody Mirabal was the recipient of the men’s All-Around award.
First place went to Josh Davison in saddle bronc riding, Zoe Billings in breakaway, Tyke Kipp in steer wrestling, Courtney Campbell in barrel racing, Sheldon Church in tie-down and Luke Webber and Garrett Hendrix for team roping.
Winners include: Paden Underwood in bareback, Casey Wood, Ryan McCauley and Tyke Kipp in saddle bronc riding and Channing Moore in bull riding. NaLynn Cline and Makayla Jacobs placed in breakaway, while Carter Blackmore and NaLynn Cline took places for barrel racing. Sheldon Church, Cody Mirabal, Jed Davison and Russel Van Soelen all placed in tie-down, Nicole Sweazea and Zoe Billings for goat tying and Trey Blackmore, Daniel Baeza, Russel Van Solen, Nicole Sweazea and Carl Sweazea in team roping.
“This was a great end to our fall semester rodeos and will be a great starting point when we kick back up in the spring,” Brown said. “Now we can relax and recover. We will continue to practice strong to stay sharp.”
The rodeo team has six rodeos left before they compete at home.
NMSU rodeo hosts the annual “Wild Ride” and the Frank DuBois Bronc Riding/Tie-Down Roping Event at the end of this month.

NMSU rodeo impresses with doubleheader victory
After Miss Apodaca's article I've posted the complete results. One thing that stands out is in the tie down roping, not only did NMSU have the Champion Roper each day, but they also won six of the eight.paying spots each day. Talk about dominating an event! It reminds one of when Clay Snure, John Pete Etcheverry, Jarret Corn and the like were competing for the Aggies.

The New Mexico State University rodeo team took more wins during the March 15-16 doubleheader at Central Arizona College in Florence, Ariz.
“I am very excited to see our men continue their dominance of the region,” NMSU rodeo coach Jim Brown said.
Brandi Pfeifer and Tyke Kipp took the All-Around wins the first day, scoring the highest points for their teams.
“The women’s team has really stepped up this semester and have pulled themselves up from a rocky start to a very much attainable team championship,” Brown said.
Among the first place winners were: Trenton Montero in bareback, Tyke Kipp in saddlebronc riding, Pacen Marez and Victor Ugalde in tie-down, Jenna Suazo in breakaway and Colt Capurro in steer wrestling.
Both men’s and women’s teams made the top spot the first day, while the men took first and the women took third the second day.
“With four rodeos to go, there’s a lot that can happen,” Brown said.
The next rodeo is scheduled for March 22 at the University of Arizona in Tucson. For a full list of rodeo events visit the NMSU Rodeo Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/nmsu.rodeo.
